quae et Cyaneae, hodie le Pavonare, insul. duae, sive potius scopuli, trans Bosporum Thracium, in ipso Ponti Euxini ostio, mille quingentis passibus ab Europa distantes; tam modicô autem inter se discretae intervallô, ut ex adverso quidem intrantibus geminae cernatitur, paulum vero deflexâ acie, coeuntium speciem praebeant. Quae res occasionem praebuit poetarum fabulis, qui eas olim inter se concurrisle tradunt; unde et nomen accepêrunt ἀπὸ τοῦ Ϛυμπλήττεςθαι, h. e. a concurrendo, seu conflictando. Ovid. l. 15.
